First day at the warehouse

Updated: May 20, 2022

Hey there, Chilopod fans! The process has begun! We had our first meeting at the warehouse in Berkeley this past Sunday. We dove right in, and ended up sketching the outline of the structure.

As you can see, it’s coming along. We had been having weekly check-ins, but seeing the outline really helps one visualize how big and cool and awesome and interactive this thing will really be. We are going to document the whole construction through a time lapse, so once this is done, we’ll be able to look back at our sweat, tears, and blood, all mutated into the Chilopod.

We’re also planning on doing a mural of the structure on the playa outside our construction space, which should help serve a few purposes. First of all, it will spruce up the outside a little bit and make the overall place feel more welcoming, which should get people excited to work and be part of this. This can be considered our ‘Radical Self-expression’. Second, we can have the mural act as a welcoming beacon for passersby who may be interested to help. Let’s call this our ‘Radical Inclusion’. And third, this allows us to leave something behind for the construction space once we’re done and gone. This can be our ‘Gifting’ and ‘Civic Responsibility’. Talking about living the Burning Man principles in the default world, right? The best part about the whole thing is that this was not planned. Some of us were talking about other things we could do, and Kat, one of the amazing folks, brought up how she can help us decorate the outside, and just like that, this idea was born.

We're very excited to see how this turns out, and we can't wait to show you.

Some other items captured this weekend included prepping for our fancy brunch at Revival on Saturday, 4/21 (reserve your spot if you haven't yet, it'll be tons of fun!) having a Burner like party at Metro Lighting around 5/12 (just as fun as Revival, so sign up for this as well!), and slowly building the maquette (this is a piece of wood, and a piece of work at that)

Speaking of work and having fun, we’re always looking for people to help out in any way they can, and we’re sure that there’s something that you can do to help us bring Chilopod to life. This concept has come this for due to all of the lovely volunteers giving us their time, and without their support, we wouldn't have made it this far. So, come join us, help us, have fun, and let's bring Chilopod to the playa!
